Probationary Period Monitoring Committee

The activity of each Assistant Professor and Researcher during their probationary period is monitored by a Probationary Period Monitoring Committee (CAPE, in Portuguese), which assists the mentor in advising the teacher or researcher during the probationary period.

The CAPE for each Professor and Assistant Researcher on probation consists of:

  • The mentor, who chairs the committee;
  • Two members, professors or researchers with tenure, from the scientific area or scientific areas related to that of the professor or researcher on probation.
    If the teacher or researcher on probation is affiliated with a single department, at least one of the CAPE members must belong to a different department. If the teacher or researcher on probation has a joint appointment between two departments, the two CAPE members may belong to each of those departments.

The two members of each CAPE are appointed by the Chair(s) of the Department(s) to which the lecturer or researcher on probation belongs, after consultation with the relevant bodies of the Department(s), namely the coordinator(s) of the scientific area(s) of the teacher or researcher.

After appointing these members, the Chair(s) of the Department(s) must inform the mentor, the CADDI, and the Academic Development Unit of the final composition of the CAPE. This process must be completed within 90 days of the start date of the contract of the teacher or researcher on probation.

CAPE meetings are convened by the respective Chair (mentor). The CAPE meets formally with the faculty member or researcher on probation at least once a year, or whenever it is useful to analyze the activity carried out and provide advice.
The annual CAPE meeting has the following objectives:

  • To participate in a presentation by the teacher or researcher on probation, on the activity carried out and the activity plan;
  • To review and discuss the activity carried out and the activity plan of the teacher or researcher on probation, based on the progress report and the aforementioned presentation;
  • To advise the lecturer or researcher on probation on the development of their work and career;
  • Prepare a writen opinion, to be forwarded to the Chair(s) of the Department(s), on the activity carried out, the activity plan, and the career development of the teacher or researcher on probation.
    The CAPE’s opinion is a single document, which conveys the Commission’s overall view on the above aspects, signed by all its members.
